Compare the New Volvo XC40 vs. the New Volvo XC60

Passenger Space

The new Volvo XC40 and the new Volvo XC60 are both roomy luxury crossovers with plush, comfortable seats. Since the Volvo XC40 is a subcompact SUV and the XC60 is a compact model, the XC60 has a little more room for passengers. Both SUVs seat five people, but the XC60 has 102.9 cubic feet of passenger volume, compared to 98.0 cubic feet in the XC40. People in St. Louis will have a bit more space to stretch out in the XC60 than they will in the XC40.

Cargo Space

There's definitely more cargo space in the larger Volvo XC60 than the Volvo XC40. St. Louis drivers will have over 63 cubic feet of room for their sports gear or luggage in the XC60. The XC40 only has 47.2 cubic feet of total cargo space, but it has a wide, square opening in back that makes it easy to load bulky items.

Horsepower and Acceleration

The Volvo XC60 comes standard with a turbocharged, 250-horsepower four-cylinder engine. Optional motors include a turbo- and supercharged 316-horsepower engine and a turbocharged hybrid motor that puts out 400 horsepower. The Volvo XC40 only offers two turbocharged, four-cylinder gas-powered engines: a 187-horsepower motor and a 248-horsepower engine. However, the new Volvo XC40 Recharge variant is an all-electric SUV that has a range of up to 208 miles on a single charge.

Maneuverability and Ride

The Volvo XC40 is almost a foot shorter in length than the Volvo XC60, so its easier to park and maneuver in St. Louis. Since the XC60 has a longer wheelbase, it rides a little smoother than the XC40.

Tech Features

Both the Volvo XC40 and the Volvo XC60 are premium luxury SUVs with tons of standard features. However, St. Louis drivers will enjoy some standard amenities in the XC60 that are only optional in the XC40. The XC60 comes standard with a panoramic sunroof, which is just an available feature in the XC40. It also comes with an under-floor storage area where you can keep valuables stowed out of sight. The XC40 has no under-floor storage area, but it does offer an optional adjustable cargo floor.

Volvo vehicles have some of the most robust safety technology on the market, and the XC40 and XC60 are no exceptions. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the new XC40 the highest rating of Good in all six crash tests. It also received a Good rating for how well the headlights illuminate the road ahead. The Volvo XC60 earned Top Safety Pick+ honors. It achieved Good ratings in all six crash safety tests, while its headlights received the second-highest rating of Acceptable for forward visibility. Both SUVs are loaded with standard advanced active safety features that protect St. Louis drivers, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, oncoming collision mitigation, lane keep assist, and blind spot monitoring.
