The automotive industry is steadily shifting towards more sustainable motoring, with battery-powered vehicles expanding their reach every year. And Volvo is doing its part, leading the way in the luxury market with its Volvo Recharge initiative—fully committing to an electrified future with plans to field a 50% PHEV and 50% EV lineup by 2025.

While Volvo's T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain has been around since 2016, the Swedish automaker debuted its first-ever production pure-electric model, the XC40 Recharge. The swift and stylish small SUV proves you don't need to sacrifice driving excitement for a more eco-friendly St. Louis commute. Here's a quick look at some of the details.

  • Performance: A pair of electric motors, one on each axle, provide the Volvo XC40 Recharge with plenty of motivation. Generating a combined 402 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque, the EV powertrain can shuttle the XC40 Recharge from a standstill to 60 mph in under 4.7 seconds.

  • Range and Charging: A 75kWh li-ion battery pack gives the XC40 Recharge a range of 208 miles per charge. With 11kW electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), the battery can draw a full charge overnight (approx. 8–10 hours). The XC40 Recharge is also capable of DC fast charging, needing just ~40 minutes (at 150kW) to ~2 hours (at 50kW) to charge the battery from 20% to 90%.

  • Standard Tech: The 9-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen is powered by Google's innovative new Android Automotive OS, replacing Volvo's previous Sensus infotainment system. With over-the-air update capability, allowing the XC40 Recharge to continue advancing over time, instead of peaking at the time of production. Additionally, like all Volvo models, the XC40 Recharge comes standard with an extensive lineup of advanced safety technologies, including Volvo City Safety collision mitigation, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™), Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keeping Aid, Road Sign Information, and more.

What's New for the 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge?

After a successful first launch in 2021, the Volvo XC40 Recharge is expected to roll into the 2022 model year with only a few updates. Notably, a 360-degree Surround View Camera joins the standard features list, as does a 12-volt power outlet in the cargo area. Additionally, while initially introduced as the XC40 Recharge P8, the small electric crossover will change its designation to the XC40 Recharge Twin to match its European counterpart.
