Plug-in Hybrid vs Full-Electric Models
While there is an obvious difference in plug-in hybrid
vs full-electric vehicles, what it means for your driving experience may not be
quite so clear. With a plug-in hybrid Volvo model, you'll have a turbocharged
and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder combustion engine plus an electric
motor driving all four wheels. This means that you can select to use a blend of
both gasoline and electric power or electric power alone, depending on what you
need on that particular trip. It's important to note that the EV-only range of
a plug-in hybrid is relatively short at just 20-25 miles from a full charge.
However, with the combined combustion and electric motors, you can go well over
400 miles as the system optimizes the efficiency of both the electric and
gasoline power.
On the other hand, the full-EV Volvo lineup uses a
much larger battery pack to make up for the lack of combustion engine range.
The result is a fuel-free range of over 200 miles, all with an electric motor
setup that delivers 402 horsepower and 554 pound-feet of torque through an
all-wheel drive system. While the range is still shorter than you'll get with a
plug-in hybrid model, 200-plus miles of range means you can plan to charge at
every meal or overnight stop and still tackle your long-range road trips in a
similar fashion.
